Pre-Boer War Silver Colonial Shooting Trophy. Kimberley Club South Africa 1886
Large, heavy Victorian British Colonial sterling silver goblet with beautiful engraved floral decoration and engraved as a shooting trophy in pre-Boer War South Africa in 1886. KIMBERLEY GUN CLUB COMPETITION CUP OPEN TO WHOLE COLONY. WON BY Fred Abrams Esqre. Weight: 448.3 gm. Diameter of rim: 130 mm. Diameter of base: 120 mm. Hall Mark: Birmingham 1886. Maker’s Mark: Hilliard & Thomason. Kimberley Club: My research has not discovered any specific details of Kimberley Gun Club but it is likely it was associated in some way with the famous Kimberley Club which was founded in 1881, with Cecil John Rhodes being a famous founding member. Kimberley Club is synonymous with the early history of Kimberley’s diamond rush and reflects the impressive ambience of one of South Africa’s oldest clubs. It was founded by the leading men of Kimberley who wanted a meeting place along the lines of the best London Clubs where they could enjoy a few drinks with their friends. Boer War: With the discovery of diamonds and gold in the region it was inevitable conflict would ensue. Minor fighting began in the 1890s and in October 1891 full scale war broke out. It was not until May 1902 that the conflict finally ended. The date on the trophy confirms it was won just 5 years before the first Boer War started. Summary: As can be seen from the photos and history (above) this is a very interesting and collectable item from an interesting era in British Colonial history.
