While the coin was popular in the East and became popular in the West after the end of apartheid-era boycotts, it long went without a silver counterpart. That changed in 2017 when the South African Mint marked the 50th anniversary of the treasured gold series with the first ever Silver Krugerrands. Those first Silver Krugerrands were considered Premium Uncirclated. The following year, the mint followed up with the first ever silver bullion versions of the coin. Both faces of the Silver Krugerrand take their designs from the gold version of the coin. On the obverse is Otto Schultz’s left-side profile of Paul Kruger.
