Collectors quickly took to this new option, and the series enters its fourth year with this 2020 edition. This piece was struck at the South African Mint from 1 oz of. Striking Springbok Design by Coert Steynberg. Dominating the obverse is a left-side portrait of one of the most significant figures in the history of South Africa, Paul Kruger. The third President of the South African Republic, Kruger remains a controversial figure in the country’s history today. He bears a stern countenance and has a long, thick beard. His effigy is joined by a pair of rim inscriptions that offer the name of the issuing nation in Afrikaans, “SUID-AFRIKA, ” and English, SOUTH AFRICA. The reverse is dominated by Coert Steynberg’s springbok antelope design. The springbok is so closely associated with the issuing nation that people often refer to its international sports teams as the Springboks. Steynberg shows the graceful animal in full bound heading to the right, though its head is turned in a way that offers the holder a better look at its face and its horns. The date, “2020, ” is split to the left and right of the animal, while the coin’s name, “KRUGERRAND, ” arches over it. GOLD 1&2 RAND & SILVER COIN. LONG PROOF COIN SETS. GOLD 1 R and 2 R coin issued from 1961 to 1983. The decimal rand currency was introduced in South Africa in February 1961, after the referendum of November 1960 which established autonomy from the British Empire , but before the new status came into effect in May 1961. The coins bear the forward-facing portrait of Jan van Riebeeck on the obverse. The initial circulation coins of the Republic were the following. 2½ cents (replaced 3d). 5 cents (replaced 6d). 10 cents (replaced 1s). 20 cents (replaced 2s). 50 cents (replaced 5s). The coins initially had the same size as the former South African coins. All except the ½ and 1 cent coins were in silver. The previous South African farthing coin (1/4d) and half-a-crown (2s and 6d) were not continued in decimal currency. The images were kept the same on the reverse of the new silver coins as per the replaced Union silver coins. In addition, two bullion coins with denominations of 1 R and 2 R were issued, replacing the gold half-pound and pound coins introduced in 1952.
