He was often regarded as a champion of the people in their fight for independence from England. For the majority of its existence, Krugerrand Coins was only available in the gold version of the coin. However in 2017 the South African Mint released the first silver version of the coin. This release was very well-received so the mint has made it an annual release. The South African Mint first opened in 1890. However in 1902 the county became annexed into the British Empire and the mint was closed as a new branch of the British Royal Mint took its place. It wasn’t until 1941 that the mint was reopened once again as the South African Mint during a process where the country began severing ties with Britain. The words “SOUTH AFRICA” are inscribed on this side of the coin in both English and Afrikaans. On the reverse of the coin the words “KRUGERRAND” and “FYNSILWER 1 OZ FINE SILVER R1″ encircle the image of a Springbok Antelope galloping across the open plains with mountains in the distance.
