The rich tradition of the Gold South African Rand began in 1967. Today, the coin is an annual favorite among countless collectors worldwide. It wasn’t until the 50th anniversary of that series, though, that South Africa issued the first ever Silver Krugerrands. Collectors quickly took to this new option, and the series enters its fourth year with this 2020 edition. This piece was struck at the South African Mint from 1 oz of. Striking Springbok Design by Coert Steynberg. Dominating the obverse is a left-side portrait of one of the most significant figures in the history of South Africa, Paul Kruger. The third President of the South African Republic, Kruger remains a controversial figure in the country’s history today. He bears a stern countenance and has a long, thick beard. His effigy is joined by a pair of rim inscriptions that offer the name of the issuing nation in Afrikaans, “SUID-AFRIKA, ” and English, SOUTH AFRICA. The reverse is dominated by Coert Steynberg’s springbok antelope design. The springbok is so closely associated with the issuing nation that people often refer to its international sports teams as the Springboks. Steynberg shows the graceful animal in full bound heading to the right, though its head is turned in a way that offers the holder a better look at its face and its horns. The date, “2020, ” is split to the left and right of the animal, while the coin’s name, “KRUGERRAND, ” arches over it. Below are inscriptions of the coin’s weight in Afrikaans and English, “FYNSILWER 1 OZ FINE SILVER, ” and its face value, R1. Flawless PF70 Black Core FDI. This coin received the highest grade awarded by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), Proof 70. That grade is reserved exclusively for coins that lack even a single imperfection that is visible under 5x magnification. NGC also certified this proof First Day of Issue.
