The third President of the South African Republic, Kruger remains a controversial figure in the country’s history today. He bears a stern countenance and has a long, thick beard. His effigy is joined by a pair of rim inscriptions that offer the name of the issuing nation in Afrikaans, “SUID-AFRIKA, ” and English, SOUTH AFRICA. The reverse is dominated by Coert Steynberg’s springbok antelope design. The springbok is so closely associated with the issuing nation that people often refer to its international sports teams as the Springboks. Steynberg shows the graceful animal in full bound heading to the right, though its head is turned in a way that offers the holder a better look at its face and its horns. The date, “2020, ” is split to the left and right of the animal, while the coin’s name, “KRUGERRAND, ” arches over it.
