In 2020, the year of the pandemic around the world, the South African Mint was either on strike or closed because somebody had the virus. One of the results of that sporadic schedule is twofold; first they were not able to produce the number of coins that they normally do- which means the population is low to begin with, and on top of that they were mostly short staffed behind schedule and their craftsmanship suffered, showing in the quality of the coins. Simply put, THIS IS THE KEY OF THE ENTIRE SERIES. They’re common, that’s why.
