Angus Arbuckle knives were manufactured in South Africa, and are highly prized by collectors. It is very difficult to find them due to few of them being imported to the United States due to the embargo against South Africa. This is custom boot dagger with orange Micarta handles and a steel blade. This is the real deal — not a replica! Condition is rated very good. There is some mild pitting on the steel and patina on the brass, commensurate with age. The orange Micarta scales are in very fine condition. See photos to get a better idea of the overall condition. Does not come with sheath. Initials on back of blade. The knife has been well-cared for. Truly a lovely knife fit for any collection! Feel free to ask about item if you have any questions. This knife came with no sheath so I made one for it. The knife is used but in very good condition. The edge is perfect and very sharp. Blade: Hollow grind 4 inches long. Blade thickness: 4 1/2 mm. Blade width: 1 1/2 inches. Thumb notches over the spine. Weight: 10.5 Oz. I found this info about the maker. Stuart Ackerman wrote: I knew Harry for over twenty years… He was a friend of mine… He was tall and had had an interesting life… And very helpful to anyone who wanted to know how to make knives… I have one of only ten folders that he made, and a very thin skinning knife… I believe that he has died recently, but no other details…- I met Harry in the early 80s at his workshop in Mercury lane, near 320 West Street. I did not see him again until he moved to his next last workshop in 25 Cato Street, above the Durban Battery Centre. Small workshop, but out of it, wonderful knives oozed out. He liked making big knives, because he had big hands, but he was equally capable of making camping and bird knives. He never felt that he was worthy of being in the Guild, and he wanted his knives to be used. He used whatever he could get, and most of his stuff was 440B, 440C and D2, and later on, N690, which was the equivalent of VG10. 12C27 as well for smaller stuff, because it was only available in 2.5mm. Handles were Micarta, Pakkawood, natural woods and horns. He loved used Buffalo Horn. Grinds were mostly hollow, on a 14 inch wheel, but flat grinds were done if you asked him nicely. Mostly pinning and peening for scales, and stainless and nickel silver for guards and bolsters. Swords, Bowies, skinning axes/hatchets, and knives of all sorts and sizes. If you could draw it, he could make it. I last saw him in 1999, he was around 72. The item “VINTAGE BOSMAN RSA SKINNER KNIFE” is in sale since Friday, December 4, 2020. Other examples exist but you will not find another set like this ever. Each knife has it’s particular carved spot in the African Mahogany case. Can’t use the’I’ word but this is from the African savanna so I’m sure you can figure out the handle material; and the artwork is gorgeous. Each knife is signed as well as seen in the pictures. This is the best set you’ll ever find and I have no doubt about that… Display case collectors item which will make for an instant heirloom. It’s the only one that exists so I cannot use the word “rare”. It’s the ONLY one. No splitting in the handles, and the blades are like mirrors. Everything has always been lubricated accordingly including the case. I’ve kept this either in a climate-controlled cabinet or in a safe for 40 years… Which makes this set an antique as well. You will not be disappointed with this immaculate set. This is a masterpiece of museum quality. This is a statement piece at the very top of ANY collection. Case: 6 3/4″ x 9″ x 2. Arno Bernard makes some of the most beautiful fixed blade knives and this surely has to be one of them. His knives are classic beauties, not some pimps’ Cadillac-looking knife. The (probably)Giraffe shin bone handle is quite nice while the blade is plain but very nice looking. It does have some very minor scratching on it but does not really detract from the knife. Other than that it was lovingly owner and cared for. The sheath looks to be Buffalo leather and is near perfect also. This piece is on consignment so there is no return. This item is available for sale locally at Hawthorne Cutlery and local antique and knife shows in the Portland, OR area. If we ever have them again. Hawthorne Cutlery is open Tuesday thru Sat. From 11ish to 4ish during this pandemic. Masks are requested but clothing is optional. Don’t forget the Antique Japanese Sword Shows the might still happen around the country. The first is in August (maybe) at the San Francisco Airport Marriott and the second is in Orlando and that date has tentatively been set for Oct. Both are wonderful three day shows. The Blade Show West might still happen in early November. Haven’t hear anything about the big Blade Show in Atlanta. Can’t really find too many good things to say about the Blade Show West here in Portland. Not offered internationally unless you consider Orlando to be international. It’s not, it’s just Florida.
