Kruger was a controversial figure in South African history, but the significance of the role he played as the third President of the South African Republic is beyond dispute. His most noticeable distinguishing feature in the portrait is his long, thick beard. He is joined by inscriptions of the issuing country’s name in Afrikaans, “SUID-AFRIKA, ” and English, SOUTH AFRICA. Coert Steynberg designed the reverse, where a springbok antelope bounds across the South African plains.
